Abbreviations, common terms & chart symbols

Bold letters indicate the most commonly used terms

( ) or [ ] = Work instructions within parentheses/brackets given number of times; OR larger sizes are listed within the brackets

* = Repeat instructions following a single asterisk as directed to end of row

 &  Slide: Slide sts back to start of row. This Sliding Technique for Multicolored patterns necessitates the use of a needles with points on both ends.

 K = Knit (as it appears on the RS row)

KPT = Knit/Purl Textures: This is one of Museum Of Knitting’s category titles to represent knitted fabrics insisting of only knit and purl stitches

LHN = Left hand needle: The needle you’re holding in your left hand

 P = Purl (as it appears on the RS row) [These are grey in the charts for sharper contrast]

RHN = Right hand needle: The needle you’re holding in your right hand

RS = Right Side: The public side of the piece

Work the stitches as they present themselves = If you’re knitting back-and-forth, remember that the stitch on the return side of the fabric will be the “opposite” of what you did on the other side. For instance, the back of a Knit stitch is a purl. So, if you’re working on a row of knits and purls, if the next stitch is smooth, then knit it, and if you see a purl bump, then purl it.
